~ THE MUSIC OF THE GODS ~

In the early ‘70’s – during some of our very special morning Meditations – Father would say: “Let’s play some music!” Immediately a small group of people would go into “The Band Room”. It had to be a small troop, because our “Music Room” was actually a garage, which we had converted! During 1973 and 74, we turned that little garage into a recording studio and band room ~ replete with the elegant egg cartons to try to protect the neighbor’s sensitivities ~ and worked magic . . . often around 5 am !

Father loved music and He created several different bands and always encouraged the individual musicians in The Family. The music energy in the Family had more or less been born when Ahom and Hom started singing together in the beginning. The music created by Hom was channeled on the spot in the now and Hom usually wrote three songs a day. Their energy was contagious and many others wanted to play. Soon the Family attracted several musicians of professional caliber who had been into the Hollywood music scene and the magic started. It seemed that several of the Family members had guitars – or maybe a bass – and you would always find somebody gathering in Soma’s room, or Sunflower’s room, to jam. People started to practice in the room that was just off the meditation room at the Mother House. Various Sons would pop in and some of the women would join in. The common recording instrument of those days was a Teac 4-track reel to reel identical to the one used to record the Beatles in the early days.

Then, Octavius came along with his double bass trap set and phenomenal skills as a drummer and Father thought, well . . . if I have a drummer, I have a band! Octavius became an integral part of the music, often masterminding the entire operation and trading stuff instruments (at Sol Betnums used equipment store, which was the place that you could find all of the instruments that today are considered very rare and desireable), in order to try to get the right equipment (and THE BEST), for the current demands – which, with the band playing experimental forms of music, Father moving things at lightening speed and such a strong emphasis on “Perfection” – often required super human performance on his part ! And then, he would take his seat at the drums, on stage, with aplomb . . . next to Father !

Soon, “The Spirit of 76” was born, and a lot of musicians and voices began to take part and various people were contributing ideas for songs. The stakes got a lot higher. Everyone wanted to try it ! And the egos were coming out of the woodwork ! “The Spirit of 76” was the band that was spotlighted at the Whiskey a Go Go and other hot clubs of the Sunset Strip.

Then, Father said “Let’s record !” As the albums began to come, the music energy became not only a much larger – and much more fundamental – part of Family life, but also a contributing factor in our Spiritual growth. Father had the Sons make a couple of albums of their own music. They would all record whatever their contribution was . . . or join together and work out songs. The first album recorded was “All or Nothing at all”. That was attributed to the band, “Father Yod and The Spirit of ‘76”. Then “Savage Sons of Yahowha” was recorded by individual sons – singing their own songs. We know that there was a lot of music played that was never recorded and a lot over 65 full albums that were recorded that many of which we are not able to find. In the studio at the Father House, the music was almost always spontaneous and many albums were recorded – completely in the now. The instruments in that studio were the best of the best – with a Steinway grand piano, full Hammond organ (with rotating speaker), Yamaha keyboard, bass and guitar amplifiers with many special effects to obtain the sounds that seemed to come down from the
