Other Music alliance & new releases
by stormchile
Hello All,
It's about time we got a new Anthology update out there, so here goes. We're pleased to announce that selected Anthology titles will be available with the folks at Other Music (New York's finest Indie retailer) once they launch their new digital download site. The OM site should be up and going within the next month and we'll keep you posted on that.
And now, onto our new releases.....
For fans of Pentagram (or anything Doom related for that matter), the Bedemon release will be right up your alley. Originally conceived in 1973 by future Pentagram guitarist Randy Palmer, the Bedemon sessions took place sporadically from 73-86. It features none other than Bobby Liebling on Vocals and Geof O'Keefe on Drums - a raw and classic slice of Doom history!
On a more acoustic note we bring you the Wizz Jones classic, 'The Legendary Me'. An undisputed giant of modern folk and one of the finest acoustic guitarists Britain has ever produced, Wizz Jones has influenced musicians from Eric Clapton, John Renbourn and Ralph Mctell to Billy Connolly, Bert Jansch and even Rod Stewart. This classic 1970 set finds him playing a mixture of standards and originals, many by his old friend Alan Tunbridge, and all arranged in his inimitable style. This release comes complete with detailed liner notes, rare photographs and three previously unreleased bonus tracks.
Long established as a cult classic and collector's grail, Mick Burgoyne and Leigh Dolphin's sole album is presented here with their full co-operation. Recorded in 1971 when they were just 19 and fresh to the studio, Fresh Maggots is one of the best distillations of folk and psychedelia ever recorded. Combining gentle, pastoral songs with violent fuzz guitar, it's a highly unusual and powerful record that enjoyed extravagant acclaim on release. Despite selling poorly, it has gone on to acquire a major reputation amongst acid folk fans, who will be especially eager to hear the seven bonus tracks included here (including the duo's rare non-album single and a previously unheard live radio session from 1971).
Thai Beat A Go-Go Vol 1 is an incredible collection of ultra rare recordings from Thailand in the 1960's. This volume focuses on red hot Thai curry rock n roll, including cosmic instrumental surf bands, crazy garage/beat bands, mystic go-go organ/wild guitar rave-ups and exotic female singers all with a totally otherworldly Thai flavor. These recordings have a sound that's completely inexplicable despite the use of standard rock instrumentation and song structures combining a fascinating and primal version of rock n roll, surf, and r 'n' b - sometimes all in one song. Two more illuminating volumes in this series will follow soon.
As promised in our previous update we bring you the never before released private press LP from Connecticut's White Flame. The album, "American Rudeness", was recorded in New Haven in 1978 and it wasn't until recently when a good friend of ours discovered a sealed copy at an estate sale in Bridgeport (!) that it came to our attention. The music on this gem most certainly owes a debt to detroit Proto-Punkers like The Stooges and MC5, but also shifts direction and hits territory that touches on the sleazier, druggier Berlin-era Iggy. What a find! Special thanks to Chris Ruggiero!
We are extremely pleased to bring you our most recent collaboration with Swedens Subliminal Sounds label. Baby Grandmothers were a short-lived Swedish band, but one of the most prolific and unique psychedelic, modal, experimental power-trios to emerge out of the Scandinavian psychedelic underground-scene. Although hailing from Stockholm, Sweden they only released one single in Finland, which has since become one of the most sought after pieces of vinyl from the era. Baby Grandmothers were formed out of the ashes of legendary R&B / beat band T-Boones in the summer of 1967. Guitar-wiz Kenny Håkansson joined the band in 1965 and with the group down to a trio they drifted into the psychedelic sounds of the time and in August 1967 released the single "I Want You", which definitely was the first hard-rock recording ever made in Sweden. The band was then re-christened Baby Grandmothers by the co-founder of the newly opened psychedelic club Filips, for which he needed a house-band. Filips was the legendary breeding ground for bands such as Hansson & Karlsson, Pärson Sound, as well as orgiastic all night jams with foreign luminaries such as Jimi Hendrix and the Mothers of Invention. Baby Grandmothers also supported Jimi Henrix on his Swedish tour in 1968 and then later turned into Mecki Mark Men, who became the first Swedish rock band to tour the US. Founding member Kenny Håkansson went on to form the highly influential Kebnekajse, who created the Swedish electric folk psych sound. This unique collection brings live-recordings made at Filips, their impossibly rare single and a rare live recording made in Finland. Painstakingly collected and researched by Dungen's guitarist Reine Fiske. Includes a lengthy and fascinating biography.
For fans of New Wave and Synth pop we bring you 'Music While You Work' a collection of tracks recorded in the early 80's by England's 1,000 Mexicans. One of the most innovative and creative independent bands of the 1980's, combining quality pop songwriting and rhythmic and harmonic richness with their unique touches of experimentalism and eccentricity. For those who like a healthy dose of humor with their pathos.
And finally we have The Truth by D.R. Hooker. Easily one of the rarest US psych LPs. The Truth was recorded in Connecticut in 1972 and might very well be the ultimate North American acid rock album ever. No hype here, just incredible talented music. Everything is absolute perfection, the wailing fuzz guitar, the psychy arrangements, his awesome voice, layers of instruments and well-crafted songs. One of those albums that keeps revealing new depths even when you've played it a hundred times. True psychedelia. Includes 6 bonus tracks not included on the original LP.
That about does it for now - We're working on a ton of great stuff for March, which will include the Lucifer Rising soundtrack (music made by Bobby Beausoleil with the Freedom Orchestra for Kenneth Anger's cult classic film) and we'll finally see our NWOBHM digital 7" series come to fruition. Much, much more, which we'll expand on in the next newsletter. Thanks for the continued support...
