Hello Folks!
Greetings once again from the Anthology headquarters. Not too sure where you're hailing from, but here in NYC the weather is perfecto for bar-b-ques, soakin' up rays, and listening to tons of new music! I myself have been plugged in to the insane garage of Monks, the heavy dub of Creation Rebel, and the Mali 70 compilation... of course we've got a few releases to supplement your occasional rained-out BBQ as well. Read on for this week's full list of releases, reissues, and rarities...
You can now download the latest installment in Steve Krakow aka Plastic Crimewave's Podcast series FREE. This ones a scorcher and focuses on 'World Psychedelia'!
We're pleased to team up with legendary reggae/roots/dub label Auralux! From the UK, these fellas do some of the finest work in reissuing unknown, and well-known classics from the masters of the genre. We celebrate our launch of the Auralux catalog this week with The Upsetters'14 Dub Blackboard Jungle--a benchmark Lee Perry production with all the bells and whistles we've come to expect from the originator of dub (remastered in analog--wow!) The other is DC Dub Connection by Prince Jammy and Scientist--an equally hypnotic album fueled by the hard drumming of Sly Dunbar and Horsemouth Wallace.
On the topic of dub, Cherry Red Records reissue of Creation Dub's Lows and Highs--produced by the legendary Adrian Sherwood--is also available this week.. certainly an incredible record from an innovative group who was one of the first to pull off the dub sound in a live performance. Certainly not dub, but drawing influence from rhythm no less, is the mysterious British post-punk outfit A Tent with an album called Six Empty Spaces... great stuff for fans of Ike Yard, This Heat, Tuxedomoon, et al.
We're now working with Discograph / Syllart Productions, a label who releases exceptional music from various African regions. Starting off their extensive label with a great one, the Mali 70 is an incredible compilation of 1960's and 1970's African music produced by Ibrahima Sylla, one of the most influential producers of African music at that time.
Light in the Attic reissue Black Monk Time by Monks has finally been added to the Anthology catalog. For those new to these ex-Pats who relocated to Germany to, quite literally, redefine garage music with their bizarro lyrics and addictive pop hooks--you're in for a treat! This is a must have for anyone delving into the chasm of garage psychedelia--Black Monk Time is a staple purchase.
LRC Ltd. offers another fine Jimmy McGriff album to Anthology this week, this time with Fly Dude, an appropriate name for Philadelphia's king of blues organ.
Another label new to Anthology's line up, Public Flipper Limited LLC, offers the Generic album by Flipper. This band is serious business; surely the west coast yielded some fantastic hard core and derivatives of punk rock, but there's something so unique about Flipper's post punk leanings, a cynicism and intelligence that perfectly meshes with their driving guitar tones. Great stuff!
Anyone who read my rant on last week's news section can guess that we're Loop fans over here at Anthology. Well, thankfully we've supplemented Fade Out with another riffy drone gem entitled Heaven's End. For a first release, this one is right on the money... a perfect combination of early punk, kraut, and stoner influences.
RPM group Mirage releases Tomorrow Never Knows, Singles & Lost Sessions 1966-1968, a collection of tracks from this UK psych-pop group known for backing Elton John during his earlier song writing days.
Sterns Records brings a great compilation to Anthology this week. Belle Epoque Volume 1: Soundiata, a collection of tracks from the Rail Band, featuring vocals Salif Keita and Mory Kante. Recorded between 1970 – 1975, this fantastic album captures the years in which African music began to garner attention outside its native borders.
Following the excellent Peter Walker release last month, we're happy to release yet another exceptional folk rarity from Tompkins Square Recordings. Harry Taussig's Fate Is Only Once was a self-relesed private pressing from 1965. For you Fahey fans, this is a gorgeous performance in the Takoma style.
Lastly, we've got 2 more outstanding reissues--both live performances--courtesy of the Water label. Judee Sill's Live In London - The BBC Recordings 1972 - 1973, a stunning collection of Judee's solo performances of vocals, piano, and guitar--including multiple versions of songs previously unreleased from the BBC archives. The other is Terry Reid's Silver White Light-Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970 by Terry Reid. Featuring 9 original Reid songs--two of which appear on The River--this recordings captures raw performances following Terry's self-imposed exile in the US.
That's it for now.. don't forget to check out Alan Licht's editorial on Elodie Lauten accompanied by a free download from The Death of Don Juan.

Greetings from Anthology!
This week’s roundup of new releases brings some really eclectic reissues; from the bizarre LSD infused chants of Bill Bissett to the fuzzed-out, guitar drones of Loop—there’s something for everyone in this batch of rarities, most of which come from labels that Anthology has recently added to our select catalog curation. Read on for more…
The prolific Tuxedomoon album You, on Crammed Records, is available this week. Known for their contributions to the NYC No-Wave scene, Tuxedomoon’s last studio album was produced well after the height of that particular era, but is quite engaging and just as fresh as their earlier works.
Gear Fab artists Fever Tree releases San Francisco Girls a digital release exclusive to Anthology Recordings, and an absolute must-listen for fans of blues-rock and psych. Their interpretations of “Day-Tripper” as well as original songs such as the chart making title track earned them notoriety among the countless psych-pop bands to emerge from the late 60s.
Anthology is pleased to announce that we’ve begun reissuing titles from the excellent Groenland label. Groenland has reissued, among several genres, the works of German bands like Roedelius, Harmonia, and others. The highly-influential band Neu! came out this week here—the self-titled album that first introduced their signature sound of streamlined guitar repetitions, half speed wanderings, and endless-groove drumming. Excellent stuff! Stay tuned for more reissues by Neu! In the weeks to come.
Light In The Attic offers an incredible, long overdue reissue of the Cold Fact release by Rodriguez—the mysterious 60’s songwriter hailing from Detroit, who oddly enough remained virtually unheard in the United States until his rediscovery in the 1990’s. This catchy pop brings to mind the arrangements of Love’s music, but with altogether different lyrics (often political) and a signature sound that makes me wonder how this slipped between the cracks during the era of its creation.
From Lyrichord we’ve got Lower Caste Religious Music From India, a comprehensive collection of Indian music--both religious and secular—covering a vast repertoire of native sounds. The liner notes go into great detail as to how this music functions within the various social castes or varnas that exist in Indian cultures.
Quannum Projects, a label known for their respected releases in hip-hop, rare groove, and funk is now available digitally through Anthology. Our first reissue with them is A New Day! The Complete Mus-I-Col Recordings of JC Davis, a collection of hard funk tracks from the saxophonist and vocalist who led The Famous Flames, James Brown’s band at the time. This one is a scorcher, with incredible drumming (no doubt sampled by someone somewhere) and infectious soul grooves a la The Meters.
Yet another new label Anthology has teamed up with is Reactor—Loop founder’s own label—starting off their catalog proper with a digital reissue of Loop’s Fade Out release from 1988. Loop does an astounding job of blending some of the most vibrant musical styles—late 60’s Detroit rock (Stooges & MC5’s heavy stoner-punk riffs) and the repetition of Kraut rock to emerge from 1970’s Europe. Not to exaggerate, but this is essential listening for fans of Spaceman 3, Velvet Underground, Bark Psychosis, etc, etc, etc….
Sterns records (yes, another new label we’re excited to work with!) launches their first release with Anthology with Orchestra Baobab’s Bamba. This is a collection of their last recordings, performed live in 1980. For folks new to Baobab, this is a fantastic introduction to Africas most celebrated dance band. For those who know the greatness of their enormous body of recordings, expect another incredible one to add to the collection!
From Warning Label records we’ve got a collection of the early tracks from The Urinals entitled Negative Capability...Check It Out!, the notorious LA punk pranksters who made some of the most clever 45 second songs to emerge from the 80’s punk era. Some of these songs are so powerful, for example the track “I’m Like You”, you’d never guess they’re backed up with a toy drum set.
And finally, Water Records--the excellent reissue label responsible for Michael Rother’s solo gems, Albert Ayler, and Baby Huey—celebrates their catalog digitally with 2 amazing reissues on Anthology. Still Valentines Day, 1969, Live At The Matrix, San Francisco is Sandy Bull’s captivating performance of eastern influenced guitar and oud mastery, only to be ingeniously complimented by subtle tape-loops of Chuck Berry! Amazing. The other is Are You Serious? by Van Duren. Duren was a multi-instrumentalist and major songwriter from the power pop scene in the late 70’s who started his career working alongside members of Big Star. Although this one features none of those collaborators, it was still quite a successful release in its time and garnered plenty of FM attention.
That’s it for this week.. hope you enjoy this week's releases, and we’ll see ya soon!

Hello Folks!
Before getting into the lengthy list of releases for this week, we’d like to announce that Anthology has joined Twitter! Click here to follow weekly up to date coverage of Anthology new releases, features, events, and more!
This week brings another unique release available exclusively on Anthology Recordings. Space Art’s Trip To The Center Head, a 1978 progressive electronic odyssey, is a nice supplement to the Onyx album released digitally last year on Anthology. This release captures nicely an era in European music transitioning from prog and kraut rock to early techno and electronica.
From Cherry Red this week we have another excellent Felt record, this time a double album entitled The Strange Idols Pattern And Other Short Stories / Ignite The Seven Cannons, two albums both capturing this 80s alternative UK band in their prime…and featuring guest vocals from Cocteau Twins member Elizabeth Fraser.
From Fledg’ling we have Very Urgent by The Chris Macgregor Group, an album of long, structurally diverse jazz tracks with exceptional horn arrangements.
We’ve got many new Gear Fab titles this week; Bill Sissett And Th Mandan Massacre Awake In Th Red Desert--one of the most amazingly bizarre albums we’ve yet to cross paths with, Magic’s “Enclosed”--a Motown Record deal-gone-bad band that fused rock, funk, and soul (appropriate coming from Detroit), Cykle Cykle Featuring The Young Ones--a 60’s pop group that changed names several times, Witch Burning by Salem Mass—an appropriate album title for this psych band from Idaho and “Overdose” by Lumbee—a well done combination of funk, psych, and chugging guitar rock.
Guerssen Records Brings some fantastic reissues to Anthology this week; Dave Bixby’s Ode to Quetzalcoatl, a reissue of one of the most heavily sought after acid-folk records from the late 60s, and Harbinger’s Second Coming album—a followup private-pressing album by Dave Bixby and others in the early 70s that was virtually unknown to exist until recently. Killer album!
From Lrc/Groove Merchants we’ve got 900 Shares Of The Blues by Mike Longo—a nice fusion album with the legendary Ron Carter on bass, and Main Squeeze by Jimmy McGriff—a 1974 release by this well-known organ master.
Sunny Side brings to Anthology another astonishing reggae album by late great Serge Gainsbourg. Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles features the original tracks, dubs, and remixes… all done in the classic roots reggae production style.
From Topic we’ve got a nice handful of excellent folk reissues this week; English Drinking Songs from A.L. Lloyd—a 1956 album originally on US label Riverside, Ramblin Jack by Jack Elliot—Woody Guthrie's most famous sidekick and early influence on Bob Dylan, Rags, Reels & Airs by Dave Swarbrick—British folk multi-instrumentalist who features Martin Carthy on this highly collectable LP, and Ashes And Diamonds by June Tabor—reissued from the 1989 LP of this high-acclaimed British songwriter and vocalist.
That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoy all these wonderful reissues, and don’t forget to Twitter us!
