Weekly Update: November 14, 2008

Hello again and welcome back! We hope everyone that had the opportunity to make it out to our first Second Sunday party at the Palihouse Holloway had a great time! For those of you who couldn't make it, no worries, because we'll be back at the Palihouse again next month on the second Sunday of December.

For those of you in Northern California, we hope you had the time this weekend to check out the Merce Cunningham Dance Company performance at UC Berkeley's Zellerback Hall. The performances featured the music of John Cage and David Behrman, accompanying Cunningham's legendary troupe of avant-garde dancers.

But the Second Sunday party and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company's performances are not the only announcements we have for you. With almost 20 new records added to the site this week, we've got plenty to talk about! Let's take a look at a few to give you an idea of what's new.

From John Cage we have three new records, including Singing Through featuring Joan La Barbara, which was released in 1990 by New Albion. Also new from Cage, we have added Empty Words (Parte III), released on Ampersand, and The Perilous Night; Four Walls, released by New Albion.

Another from Jackie Mittoo, At King Tubby's features additional keys by famed Winston Wright. Re-released on Attack Records this is another amazing record from Kingston's renowned producer King Tubby.

From Australian label, Chapter Music, we have two new post-punk compilations. Helping to chart Australian post-punk between 1978 and 1984, Can't Stop It Australian Post Punk 1978 to 1982 and Can't Stop It 2 Australian Post Punk 1979 to 1984, both albums feature 20 rare tracks each.

From Henry Flynt we've added four new titles to the site this week. From Locust Music comes Backporch Hillbilly Blues Volumes 1&2, Henry Flynt & Nova'Billy, and the experimental Raga Electric. And from Ampersand, make sure to check out Graduation And Other New Country And Blues Music.

And from Cherry Red Records in the U.K. we have a mixed-bag of new albums. The first of these new titles comes from American 70s Sunshine-pop duo Joe & Bing with their album titled Daybreak. This is an amazing folk rock album that we strongly recommend. From the U.K. comes an amazing album by Tracy Thorn. Her original solo work, A Distant Shore, is a collection of songs recorded and released prior to her work with Everything But The Girl. Also from the U.K., we have added new-wavers, Young Marble Giants', Live At The Hurrah which was recorded at the Hurrah Club in New York during their wild 1980 U.S. tour.

There are plenty more new albums coming up this next week, and make sure to check out all the new stuff that we didn't have the time and space to mention here - just check the New Releases section under the Browse link above! Also, make sure to check back this next week as we'll have some photos up from the first Second Sunday party at the Palihouse Holloway hotel in Los Angeles!

This Weekend: Historic performances by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company featuring the music of John Cage and David Behrman

For those of you in Northern California, make sure to check out the Merce Cunningham Dance Company's performances at UC Berkeley this weekend!

Dancing to music composed by the late John Cage and David Behrman - both featured on Anthology's site - Cunningham's legendary American, avant-garde dance troupe will perform this coming weekend, (November 14-15), at Berkeley's Zellerback Hall.

Cunningham has had a long collaborative history with John Cage's work, stemming back to the 1940s. Their work has co-existed to a large degree since, and this recent exhibition at Berkeley is an amazing opportunity to see it as nearly-90 year old Merce Cunningham originally planned.

For details on the event and where to purchase tickets, click HERE.

Weekly Update: November 7, 2008

Hello everyone, wow what a week?! Sorry it has been a while since we have managed to fill you all in on what's new to the site. We have a bunch of new things to be excited about - including a new President-elect! - so let's get started.

First we'll start with a couple of announcements. If you haven't noticed the flyer posted below, we're throwing a resident party called Second Sundays. It's going to be hosted by the Palihouse Holloway hotel in Los Angeles, CA. The Palihouse Holloway is beautiful and we're really excited to partner with them for this party. The first one is this Sunday, November 9th. We're already confirmed for the second Sunday of every month for the next four months, so get your calendars out and write that down.

Also, we've started working on some original video content to add to the site! A few weeks ago we asked a few of our favorite artists if they might be interested in doing video interviews for the site. So far the response has been pretty good and we're hoping to have some new video content up in the next month or two. So keep checking back to see what's new on that front.

As far as new records, we have been working hard with some help from our friends at Sunbeam Records to get Bread, Love And Dreams' The Strange Tale of Captain Shannon And The Hunchback from Gigha and Rain by Rain. These are both amazing records and definitely worth a listen!

And with help from reggae and dub re-issue label, Attack Records, we've continued to grow our collection of works from the famed Kingston studio band the Aggrovators. Now available on the site is Agrovators Meets The Revolutioners Channel One, which is a compilation of works recorded at legendary Kingston studio Channel One between the Aggrovators and another amazing Kingston group known as the Revolutioners, (a.k.a. Revolutionaries). As well, make sure to take the time to check out The Aggrovators @ King Tubby's Studio!

From famed writer and poet, Eugene B. Redmond we have Blood Links And Sacred Places on Chicago label, Ikef. Redmond, although currently best-known for his writing as Poet-Laureate of East St. Louis, made a name for himself as a free-jazz musician in the San Francisco Bay-area during the late 60s and early 70s.

And last, but definitely not least, we have also added another Bridget St. John Album, titled Thank You For. Be on the lookout for more from Bridget on Anthology in the near future! As well, we have also added Ed Askew's 1968 folk masterpiece, Ask The Unicorn. Make sure to take a look at all of these new additions and stayed tuned for more!

"Henry Flynt in New York" - A video film project by Benjamin Piekut

In the 1960s and 70s Henry Flynt, a composer, avant garde musician, philosopher, and socio-political activist made his mark on downtown New York.

Over the course of 2 years, (between 2005 and 2007), Historical Musicology Ph.D. candidate at Columbia University, Benjamin Piekut, interviewed Flynt on film, discussing his work and the events that passed while Flynt was most active on the forefront of politics, art, and music in New York City. Released in September of 2008, the videos can be found here.

Although still very active, Flynt's work has largely fallen under the radar since the 70s. This is an amazing chance to go back in time and find out what he was thinking and doing at the time. We at Anthology are proud to feature Henry Flynt - so stay tuned because our collection of his work is growing!

Weekly Update: October 3, 2008

Another week has passed and we're happy to announce another batch of albums that are up on the site! We hope everyone has had a chance to download the Featured Download, "Dolorita", which was recorded by renowned ethnomusicologist Verna Gillis during a trip to the Dominican Republic in 1972.

Along with the Free Download, we were very excited to post a new Featured Editorial by Che Chen on world-music label, Lyrichord. Nick Fritsch, the son of Lyrichords founder Peter Fritsch, was kind enough to send the photographs that accompany the piece and give us some input about the label and its history.

In other news, we are happy to add some more new titles from the legendary New York jazz label, ESP-Disc. Make sure to check out the incredible Frank Wright collection, The Complete ESP-DISK Recordings. As well, we've added another great live album from Albert Ayler, titled Live On The Riviera, Sun Ra's Heliocentric Worlds, Vol. 1 & 2, Pharaoh's First by Pharoah Sanders, Steve Lacy's The Forest And The Zoo, and Sings by infamous 60s cult-leader, Charles Manson!

From Locust Music subsidiary, Ikef, we have two new titles - Sound Awareness and Move Ever Onward - from former Sun Ra Arkestra flautist and french horn player, Brother Ah.

And from last week's Featured Label, Cherry Red Records, we have Bored from Detroit punk rock group Destroy All Monsters. Featuring former of MC5 and the Stooges, Destroy All Monsters captures a part of the rock and hard-core scene that, at one time, defined Detroit.

Our first release from re-issue label RetroAfric, we've got a amazing album from Sierra Leone natives, Geraldo Pino and The Heartbeats. Heavy Heavy Heavy will have you dancing in no time.

And finally, from this week's Featured Label, Chicago's Locust Music, we've added Henry Flynt's C Tune. On this single-track, 47-minute long album, Flynt conducts a psychadelic meditation using simply an electric violin and a tambourine.

We're adding new albums, featured downloads, news and editorials on a daily basis - so be on the lookout over the weekend and early next week for more from ESP-DISK and Lyrichord, as well as some other surprises!

Weekly Update: September 20, 2008

This week we were proud to post a new editorial featuring an interview of Anthology Recordings artist, Pau Riba. The interview, conducted by WFMU DJ Rob Hatch-Miller, takes a look at Riba's life and recordings during the late 60s and early 70s. Riba looks back at his life under the Franco regime in Spain and his times living in an island hippie commune.

From Lovely Music we've got another David Behrman release, titled Leapday Night. Released in 1991, Behrman explores sound using a mix of traditional instruments and home-built computer and synth modulation.

As well we've added to our collection of Anne Briggs' work with her album A Collection. Briggs, a UK born folk songstress, is known for her wild persona and a voice to back it up. This album is a wonderful compilation of songs from her complete catalog.

For the British jazz fans, we've added three titles from English jazz legend Graham Collier! Performed by three line-up variations of his band, Graham Collier Music these three titles - Portraits, Darius, and Mosaics - explore jazz sound and composition, stretching the genre.

And with the release of other new titles from Brother Ah & The Sounds Of Awareness, Barry Brown, Gamelan Son of Lion, The Happy Family, Arthur Russell, and Italian group Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, this week turned out to be very busy and exciting for us here at Anthology!

Make sure to lookout for a new feature editorial on the historic Lyrichord Records. Lyrichord has been chronicling cultural music since its inception in 1950 and has been almost monolithic in its quest to archive even the obscure music from around the world.

Weekly Update: September 12, 2008

Hello, Everyone!

We've got tons of new titles waiting in the wings and it's just a matter of time until they're ready. So we thought we'd try something new here at Anthology Recordings and add a weekly recap - letting you all know what's new to the site for the week and also give you all a little teaser for what's coming up next week as well!

First of all, we'd like to apologize in advance for any technical issues we're having with the site. We've been working non-stop for the last couple of months, rebuilding the site from the inside out to bring you more features, speed up browsing and downloading, and make the site easier to navigate. But our work isn't done yet! We're getting to the final stages and some of those nasty bugs are finally starting to appear. So please, bear with us just a little longer and we promise we'll have things running smooth as soon as we possibly can.

We started this week off rockin', offering up an ultra-rare live track for free! This one came from Soft Machine's live album, titled Middle Earth Masters, and was recorded at the infamous Middle Earth club in London way back in 1967.

Along with the free download, our old friend Steve Krackow dug a little deeper into Soft Machine's history, (and catalog), in our featured editorial of the week.

Also, from last week, if you haven't checked out Steve Holtje's piece, Albert Ayler, we would definitely recommend digging it up in the editorial archives!

Brand new for this week we've got a rush of new titles from UK label Cherry Red Records. These five titles by the British rock outfit, Felt, are sure to keep your attention.

From Chicago label Locust Music, we've got another rare dig by Isreali psych-rock artist Danny Ben-Israel. Known for his antics in the studio and his early pop-records, Ben-Israel delivers some of the best fuzzed-out guitars around.

For you folk music fans out there, we've got a great new title from Anne Briggs. From Fledg'ling Records, Briggs' Sing A Song For You is another one of those gems that, although recorded in 1972, never found its way into the public eye until 1996! Backed by Barry Dransfield and Steve Ashley's Ragged Robin band this album is a great addition to the Anthology catalog.

On the avant garde/experimental fronts we've added two artists from Lovely Music. We're really excited to add four new titles from Alvin Lucier and another two from David Behrman, including Behrman's On The Other Ocean and Lucier's intriguing Music On A Long Thin Wire.

Other releases for this week include works from Augustus Pablo, Alan Watts, and a collaboration from Gene Estribou and Jean Paul Pickens, entitled Intensifications. Be on the lookout next week for a slew of new releases and a new editorial featuring an interview with Anthology artist Pau Riba by resident WFMU dj Rob Hatch-Miller.

Also, for those of you on the mailing list - keep an eye out for the new newsletter coming out Monday morning! If you're not on the list, sign up for free by registering above.

Enjoy!

We recently just added her albums, Betty Davis and They Say I'm Different, to the Anthology site and can't believe our luck at finding this interview.

New Music!

6 new albums available today – enjoy!

Ron Matelic – Never before released recordings from Anonymous/J.Rider front man Ron Matelic! Mostly recorded between 1998 & 2001 – some of this stuff ranks up there with the best of both Matelic’s prior projects – Amazing, Jangly, Psychedelic-Pop.

The Damnation Of Adam Blessing – DOAB’s first two albums are now available here! Cleveland’s own DOAB are truly one of the overlooked bands of the late 60’s/early 70’s and evaded many of the pitfalls of the times by creating truly innovative and memorable Hard Rock. Both are absolute essentials for any fan of the genre.

Tony Allen – Probably best known as Fela Kuti’s drummer and music director of Kuti’s band, Afrika 70 who created the sound that came to be known as ‘Afro-Beat’. This is a complete Anthology of Tony’s first albums: Jealousy (’75), Progress (’76), No Accomodation for Lagos (’78) and No Discrimination (’79).

Jukka Tolonen – The first solo outing from pioneering Finnish guitarist, Jukka Tolonen. A frequent collaborator with Wigwam and Pekka Streng, Jukka was known as the most innovative player in Finland (and even won their prestigious Georgie award for “Jazz musician of the year” in 1974.

Satwa - Reissue of the first ever private press LP from Brazil. Recorded and released in 1973 by the duo of Lula Cortes & Lailson. A real lost masterpiece from any angel, and the first release of the fertile Recife psych scene of the early 70's... mesmerizingly beautiful sitar & 12 string psych ragas beaming strait for your third eye, and lifted ever higher by occasional angelic vocals or a burst of fuzz guitar...truly amazing stuff sure to turn the ears of any folk/psych fan, past or present...

News 10/15 - New Site!

After many hours of laboring, we are excited to officially have the new Anthology site live! First, we’d like to say that there are 40 new records available for you! We’ll let you browse around, but we will say that there are some very exciting new label alliances – Sundazed, Asterisk (Numero Group), Soundway and Love - you’ll want to check out a bunch of their records. We’ll also have regularly posted editorial features on the site – this week is a new interview with Kim Salmon (of Scientists fame) and we have interviews and features coming up with Blossom Toes, Pau Riba, Ryan Trevor and Parson Sound, among others.

We'll also have a 'guest' podcast as often as possible - right now, we're lucky enough to have Steve Krakow of Galactic Zoo Dossier/Plastic Crimewave providing us with an excellent Folk soundtrack. You can stream or download that at will...

Otherwise, we’ll have lots of great stuff coming your way in the near future...now that the new site is up, you can expect regular updates on all fronts.

New Releases 8/20

First up is Catalan singer/songwriter Pau Riba's psych/folk masterpiece, ' Jo, La Donya I EL Gripau'. Recorded in seclusion on the island of Formentera 'Jo, La Donya..' is a concept album about Riba's first born son coming into the world. Originally released on the Spanish Nuevos Medios label in 1971 the album is almost entirely acoustic and features recordings of nature interspersed with wonderfully upbeat songs that bring to mind the finer moments of The Incredible String Band or at times the spirit of the Tropicalia movement (Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil etc). This is the first in a series of reissues we will be doing of Pau Riba's early work. Next up is Riba's debut double album 'Diotriopa I & II' which will be released in conjunction with a full article/interview in the new extended editorials section of our website. ...more on that below.

Although the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape helped define the San Francisco scene in the 60s, there was one band that was the catalyst for it. The Charlatans are unsung heroes of the era -- a band that not only have been credited with starting the Haight/Ashbury Psych scene, but are also the originators of the 'San Francisco sound'. Born out of the ashes of the SF Folk/Jug-band scene, the band formed in 1964 and began making a name for themselves. The group was started by George Hunter and Richard Olsen and also featured Dan Hicks (later of Hot Licks fame), Michael Ferguson and Mike Wilhelm. The bands 1965 residency at the Red Dog Saloon is cited to be the legendary and inspiring stint that helped the stylistic shift on the scene. Two key things are said to have happened during that residency - the band took LSD (not yet the norm), which fueled several of the performances and also created psychedelic poster art to promote the performances (the artwork was later aped by the Filmore in 1966 to promote their gigs).

Although they recorded and released a single following their stand at the Red Dog, the band went through some line up changes and did not manage to release a proper album until 1969. By this time, the backlash against SF psych bands and the hippie scene was strong and the album would not stand a chance. However, the mark they left remains intact and Anthology is incredibly proud to make this collection of music available digitally for the first time.

Yet another new collaboration that we are quite excited about... South American Psych connoisseurs take note, Re-psych-led has been collecting some of the finest moments in Peruvian Psychedelia for a little while now and this is the first of their titles that we will be making available digitally. If you already know about Laghonia and their albums: "Glue" & "Etcetera" ( 1971 ), you probably wonder what exactly this release is. It is a dream made true. 54 minutes of unprecedented music recorded between 1967 and 1970, plus two unreleased tracks from the rehearsals sessions of their first album. The song "Confusion in the Street" was recorded in concert. If you collect South American psychedelic music or are starting to get involved with this kind of music, you should know this unique Peruvian band, one of the few in South America that used Hammond B2 organ in the studio and live performances. This band played only original compositions influenced by The Beatles, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, Cream and many others. Their first album is one of the best rock albums in South America. Now, you can listen to what came before.

Once upon a time, when the music business was more music than business (but only just), there was a band called Odyssey that created a quintessential dose of New York sixties psychedelia -- strong harmonic vocals, heavy swirling organ, and fuzz guitar riffs of the greatest ferocity. Their lone album, Setting Forth, one of the ten rarest and most sought after US psychedelic albums, is now available digitally. This is truly one of the cornerstones of underground psychedelic music, recorded in 1969, released in an edition of fewer than 100 copies, and impossible to find as it only came in a plain white cardboard sleeve. Enjoy!!

Classical M could have made a great album if given the chance. As it is, the songs contained on Bad Guys (taken from several 45's as well as a bunch of unreleased tracks) make for a stunning collection, with the band's psychedelic flourishes, outrageous melodies, and fantastic attention to production detail evident throughout. This profoundly original music was made in three short years (1967-1970): twenty-four delirious and provocative songs that establish Classical M as perhaps the best, and certainly the most intriguing French band of all time. Their offbeat sense of rhythm and harmony, the complex intertwining of voices, and perhaps more than anything, their unusual practice of trying to play all sorts of instruments--be they electronic or traditional--these elements make the music of this odd French trio unique and very special. We are proud to make this music available to the world.

Terry Manning's 'Home Sweet Home' is best known as the recording debut of Big Star's Chris Bell. This outrageously enjoyable blend of psychedelic rock, Memphis soul and dirty R&B kicks off with one of the most audacious and successful Beatles covers ever. A feast of fuzz guitar, sweet vocals and funky rhythms, Home Sweet Home is a tongue-in-cheek blast from start to finish, and guaranteed to delight fans of power pop worldwide.

New Releases 6/7

Greetings all - we are very pleased to bring you a diverse selection of new titles to ease your way from Spring into Summer. A bit of UK folk, some Soul/Jazz, some classic Hardcore Punk, some spacey lounge oddities, a bit of Proto-Punk and some wonderfully psychedelic pop songs just to bring it all back home. So whatever your fancy when it comes to rare, undiscovered or under-appreciated gems we've probably got just the thing you didn't know you were looking for...

First up, we have Oneness of Juju's second (and yes, classic) album, "Space Jungle Luv". Released in 1976 (one year after the acclaimed "African Rhythms"), the album is a mixture of Soul, Free Jazz & Funk. Led by legendary saxophonist, J. Plunky Branch, the Space Jungle Luv set is a more atmospheric affair than the aforementioned African Rhythms and has the band venturing into more R&B infused jams while also adding vocalist Jacqueline Holman (aka Lady Eka-Ete).

Next up we have the space lounge oddities of one Attileo "Art" Mineo. "Man In Space With Sounds" is one of those legendary LPs many have heard about but few have ever actually heard or seen. A rare souvenir of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, this music served as the soundtrack to a ride called the Bubbleator, which transported fair visitors through an overview of the future, a technological utopia where science and space travel promised solutions to all of humanity's plights. Needless to say, that future never arrived and this music (actually recorded in the early 1950s) still sounds as futuristic today as it must have back then. This release has two different versions of the original album, one with sprightly introductory voice-overs for each song, and the other solely instrumental. The all-original compositions fall somewhere between nervous Philip Glass and 1950s sci-fi movie music, arranged with string orchestra in a sometimes rhythmic, polyrhythmic, or merely ambient cloud of odd electronic space noises. A unique document of this under appreciated composer and arranger.

We're gonna go back in time when a hairy young Briton was sleeping off a hangover called the 60's, a time unsure of directon for the coming decade. With it's stash all spent a generation was resting it's head, but not everyone had gone to bed. Three wild kids have stayed up to smash all the rules and rock-out. Deep underground could be heard a rumble - the Proto-punk throb of Crushed Butler. Playing prestigious gigs with the likes of Atomic Rooster, Third World War, Mott The Hoople, Osibisa and Kevin Ayers; Crushed Butler routinely blew the headlining act off the stage with their ferocious brand of hooligan rock and were described by one contemporary reviewer as being "three ugly, heavy musicians, making music to match. Often referred to as the first British Punk band 'Uncrushed' is a collection of recordings from their brief existance from 1969-71.

You may remember our release of Wizz Jone's essential album 'The Legendary Me' from a few months back. Well here is a second installment of Folk jams from the UK guitarist/singer, Lazy Farmer. This 1975 ultra-rarity was originally released only in Germany. Featuring guitar legend Wizz Jones as well as ex-COB member John Bidwell and multi-instrumentalist Jake Walton, it's a haunting collection of beautifully-arranged folk standards, along with a handful of glorious cover versions. This reissue has been produced with the full collaboration of the band - and, as originals are now highly sought-after, it's a chance to hear the album without paying hundreds of dollars! Comprehensive liner notes are available with the full album download.

Way ahead of its time, the Free Spirits' radical 1967 album has been a missing link in the combination of Rock & Jazz until fairly recently. Featuring the young Larry Coryell, who made his recording debut here, the band was only together briefly but dazzled all who heard them (including Jimi Hendrix, the Doors and the Velvet Underground) with their revolutionary brand of psychedelic jazz-rock. Produced with the band's full involvement, this package comes complete with a rare non-LP bonus track, previously unseen photos and detailed liner notes by Richie Unterberger available with full album download.

In the last newsletter, we mentioned a new collaboration with New Jersey Hardcore label Mad At The World records. The first in a set of releases with them is the classic sole EP by the enigmatic Queens band Urban Waste. Roger of Agnostic Front has said "they're the band that got me into hardcore!" Urban Waste was part of the New York renaissance of hardcore punk in the early 1980's. Much more raw, visceral, and overtly confrontational than their New York punk predecessors, these boys were contemporaries to Reagan Youth (bass player Andy Apathy was an early member), the earliest incarnation of the Beastie Boys, and the Bad Brains. This is a re-issue of the sole EP by one of the most sought after and enigmatic bands from the earliest days of New York hardcore.

Another early Hardcore classic from our friends at Mad At The World Records, The Nihilistics self titled debut album was originally released in 1983 and has never been available in any digital format before. The Nihilistics hailed from Long Island, but gigged around Manhatten in clubs like A7, CBGB's and the Mudd Club, and appeared on the legendary New York Thrash compilation with THE BEASTIE BOYS, THE MAD, and THE BAD BRAINS. Through their wild live shows, they developed a reputation as one of the most damaged and misanthropic bands in New York City.

Recorded in 1977 as a set of demos and never properly released at the time, J. Rider was Anonymous main man Ron Matelic's post Anonymous Band formed mainly to perform his songs live. They made one set of recordings appropriately titled 'No Longer Anonymous' which untill fairly recently sat quietly in his vaults and became the stuff of legends. While J. Rider uses a similar blend of upbeat westcoast style rock to his previous project 'No Longer Anonymous' differs mainly in the production style which is a slicker, more refined take on the bands sound, but still remains an essential piece. Frontman and chief songwriter, Ron Matelic, is still at the top of his game, delivering excellent songwriting in the vein of The Byrds and CSNY.

And here's a brief update on what you can expect in the near future:

We've got some amazing Turkish Psych from Ayet Aydin's grup Bunalim. You may have gotten a taste of these guys from the recent Shadoks CD reissue, but here we're making it available digitally for the first time. Since Bunalim only released a handful of singles, this release was extremely welcome. Hailed as one of the great Turkish acts of it's time, members of the band went on to work with luminaries such as Erkin Koray, Mogollar, Ter & Edip Akbayram. Great stuff!

We'll also be offering up a round of releases from the legendary Finnish label, Love Records. There will be five total - Mummi Kutoo, Wigwam's "Being", Piirpauke 2, Pekka Pohjola's "Pihkasilmä Kaamakorva" & Jukka Tolonen's "Tolonen!" - say that five times fast! We'll have more info on all of these great records in the next newsletter.

Please stay tuned for more news, and as always, thank you for your support.

New Releases Crushed Butler & Urban Waste

We just posted up two new releases - The first is Crushed Butler - Proto-Punk masters hailing from late sixties London. Truly innovative and ahead of its time stuff on par with anything the Stooges or MC5 were doing. Next is Urban Waste, a Queens Hardcore Punk group that came and went in a flash. Their sole 12" is here in its entirety, so enjoy!

Tomorrow we'll be posting three more records - Lazy Farmer (Folk standards featuring Wizz Jones), Attileo Mineo (a rare souvenir of the 1962 Seattle Wolrd's Fair, this music served as the soundtrack to a ride called the Bubbleator!) & J.Rider (the second installation in the Anonymous saga), so stay tuned!

Anthology Recordings and digital age diggin’

One of my favorite new record labels, Anthology Recordings is a bit of a contradiction at first glance. It issues obscure albums, lost tapes and unreleased sessions by long-gone artists and bands, usually in the noise, psychedelia, punk, folk, instrumental soul-funk and early electronic genres. The thing is, the label is all about the very current phenomenon, the digital download, so the reissues are not available on CD, just through the label’s online shop, usually exclusively...

New Releases 4/10

We are very pleased to bring you Debris' self-released LP 'Static Disposal'. Name-checked in the now legendary Nurse With Wound list and originally released in 1976, this one of a kind Dada/Punk/Psych masterpiece from Chickasha, Oklahoma is a must for fans of raw, twisted and beautiful pre-Punk Psychedelia. Influenced by bands such as Captain Beefheart, The Stooges and early Roxy Music, but more akin to contemporaries such as Hearthan-era Pere Ubu, Siren-era Chrome, Indiana-era MX-80 Sound and Canadian miscreants Simply Saucer, Debris' sole LP is a slice of truly mind altering sonic mayhem. Includes all eleven songs from the original LP culled from the original master tapes, plus rare photos and extensive biography by three of the bands original members.

Another overlooked gem. Mournin' by Germany's Night Sun could very well be one of the heaviest records of all time! Often compared to Deep Purple or even Sabbath, but even more over the top, Mournin' is a one off album released in 1972 and then barely heard from again.

After celebrated 60's rockers The Action dissolved, some of the remaining members went on to form the more Psych/Folk oriented Mighty Baby. Their second and final album 'Jug of Love' originally appeared in 1971, and has gone on to become one of the best-loved underground recordings of its time. Produced by Mike Vernon (David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Ten Years After), it's an uplifting collection of Folk and Country-influenced jams that showcases the band's fluid, expressive musicianship and the astonishing guitar playing of Martin Stone. This long-awaited official reissue has been assembled with their full involvement, and comes complete with rare photographs, full liner notes and four ultra-rare bonus tracks, making it an essential purchase for lovers of 'Acid Folk' and Psychedelia.

For fans of Parson Sound (or any other related jams - Harvester, International Harvester, etc) we have some of the best ever live recordings (and that's how this band should be heard) from the legendary post Parson Sound band Träd Gräs Och Stenar (Trees Grass & Stones) recorded at the first ever Swedish out doors summer hippie festival in Sweden 1970. The sound is just amazing: a stoned lysergic wall of acid guitars jamming away and never letting up, pounding bass , furious drums and mystical howling vocals . A true landmark in Psychedelic/Progressive history.

Bobby BeauSoleil's soundtrack for Kenneth Anger's legendary film Lucifer Rising has arrived, and it is everything you hoped it would be! Recorded quite literally behind bars in Californias Tracy State prison in the mid 70's by Bobby Beausoleil with The Freedom Orchestra this mythic album of instrumental psychedelia gradually builds from trance inducing electronic passages to densley layered guitar driven songs. Includes the entire original soundtrack plus two extra pieces recorded shortly after Lucifer Rising by Bobby with The Freedom Orchestra adding up to over an hour and half of intense and other-wordly music. Also inlcudes an in depth description of the events which took place around the recording written by Bobby BeauSoleil himself as well as rare photographs.

Posessor of one of the finest voices of her generation, Southampton, UK-based Jaki Whitren was just nineteen when she recorded Raw But Tender. This a soulful collection of banjo-plucked, country-tinged folk-rock was originally released on CBS in 1974. Featuring members of Matthews Southern Comfort and Fotheringhay, as well as guitar legend Albert Lee, Raw But Tender shows a singular artist with a diverse range going from upbeat and almost funky to mellow singer songwriter inspired songs over the span of this great collection. Comes complete rare photgraphs and detailed notes by Jaki herself.

And finally we bring you one of the most-loved British Psychedelic albums of all time, The Open Mind is a hard-rocking collection that sank without trace upon its original release in 1969. This definitive reissue comes complete with both sides of their two ultra-rare non-album 45s and detailed liner notes, making it the most comprehensive collection of their music ever assembled.

There's lots of amazing stuff on the horizon - The second installment in the Anonymous saga will be available at the end of April. Following the mind-blowing album, 'Inside The Shadow", Anonymous changed their name to J.Rider and released the one off album, "No Longer Anonymous", which is a slicker, more refined take on the bands sound, but still remains an essential piece. Frontman and chief songwriter, Ron Matelic, is still at the top of his game, delivering excellent songwriting in the vein of The Byrds and CSNY.

Urban Waste was part of the New York renaissance of hardcore punk in the early 1980's.

There will be another round of Ya Ho Wha 13 records to be released - "The Lovers & The Chariot", "Contraction" & "The Operetta". Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a longer list of Ya Ho Wha reissues to come.

The illusive NWOBHM 7" series that we've been promising is on the way. We're hopeful that we can release this at the end of the month. Some titles that we hope to have ready will come from bands like: Witchfynde, 100% Proof, Bashful Alley, Gaskin & more.

We'll be collaborating with Illinois based Lion Productions on a couple of releases to bring you Classical M's, "Bad Guys: The Complete Collection" and Odyssey's, "Setting Forth". We hope this will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship as Lion has managed to release some of the most excellent reissues out there (Plastic Cloud, Friends, Agincourt, etc). Much more on these releases soon...

This is only the tip of the iceberg, so please stay tuned for more news and as always, thank you for your support.

New Releases 3/22

We're very pleased to announce 4 new releases that are available now. The first is the soundtrack to Kenneth Anger's cult classic film, Lucifer Rising. If you're unfamiliar with the record & movie, please be sure to check out both. Also, please read the very extensive liner notes for what is sure to be one of the most interesting and amazing stories you've heard in a while - this record was made by Bobby BeauSoleil (with The Freedom Orchestra) while he was in prison.

We're also releasing one of Britain's best-loved Psychedelic albums - The Open Mind. Released in 1969 to little notice, this record has gone on to be a collector's favorite. Next up is the beautiful Jaki Whitren with a soulful collection of country-tinged Folk-Rock. And last, but certainly not least, we have a collection of Soul-Funk instrumentals from Moody, titled "The Gentle Rain". This album was conceived and arranged by Nick Ingman, whose work adorns Radiohead, David Bowie, Bjork, Oasis and countless others. This is a goldmine for fans of synthesizers, beats and basslines! It should also be noted that all three of these records come with extensive liner notes that are only available with a full album purchase.

Other Music alliance & new releases

Hello All,

It's about time we got a new Anthology update out there, so here goes. We're pleased to announce that selected Anthology titles will be available with the folks at Other Music (New York's finest Indie retailer) once they launch their new digital download site. The OM site should be up and going within the next month and we'll keep you posted on that.

And now, onto our new releases.....

For fans of Pentagram (or anything Doom related for that matter), the Bedemon release will be right up your alley. Originally conceived in 1973 by future Pentagram guitarist Randy Palmer, the Bedemon sessions took place sporadically from 73-86. It features none other than Bobby Liebling on Vocals and Geof O'Keefe on Drums - a raw and classic slice of Doom history!

On a more acoustic note we bring you the Wizz Jones classic, 'The Legendary Me'. An undisputed giant of modern folk and one of the finest acoustic guitarists Britain has ever produced, Wizz Jones has influenced musicians from Eric Clapton, John Renbourn and Ralph Mctell to Billy Connolly, Bert Jansch and even Rod Stewart. This classic 1970 set finds him playing a mixture of standards and originals, many by his old friend Alan Tunbridge, and all arranged in his inimitable style. This release comes complete with detailed liner notes, rare photographs and three previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Long established as a cult classic and collector's grail, Mick Burgoyne and Leigh Dolphin's sole album is presented here with their full co-operation. Recorded in 1971 when they were just 19 and fresh to the studio, Fresh Maggots is one of the best distillations of folk and psychedelia ever recorded. Combining gentle, pastoral songs with violent fuzz guitar, it's a highly unusual and powerful record that enjoyed extravagant acclaim on release. Despite selling poorly, it has gone on to acquire a major reputation amongst acid folk fans, who will be especially eager to hear the seven bonus tracks included here (including the duo's rare non-album single and a previously unheard live radio session from 1971).

Thai Beat A Go-Go Vol 1 is an incredible collection of ultra rare recordings from Thailand in the 1960's. This volume focuses on red hot Thai curry rock n roll, including cosmic instrumental surf bands, crazy garage/beat bands, mystic go-go organ/wild guitar rave-ups and exotic female singers all with a totally otherworldly Thai flavor. These recordings have a sound that's completely inexplicable despite the use of standard rock instrumentation and song structures combining a fascinating and primal version of rock n roll, surf, and r 'n' b - sometimes all in one song. Two more illuminating volumes in this series will follow soon.

As promised in our previous update we bring you the never before released private press LP from Connecticut's White Flame. The album, "American Rudeness", was recorded in New Haven in 1978 and it wasn't until recently when a good friend of ours discovered a sealed copy at an estate sale in Bridgeport (!) that it came to our attention. The music on this gem most certainly owes a debt to detroit Proto-Punkers like The Stooges and MC5, but also shifts direction and hits territory that touches on the sleazier, druggier Berlin-era Iggy. What a find! Special thanks to Chris Ruggiero!

We are extremely pleased to bring you our most recent collaboration with Swedens Subliminal Sounds label. Baby Grandmothers were a short-lived Swedish band, but one of the most prolific and unique psychedelic, modal, experimental power-trios to emerge out of the Scandinavian psychedelic underground-scene. Although hailing from Stockholm, Sweden they only released one single in Finland, which has since become one of the most sought after pieces of vinyl from the era. Baby Grandmothers were formed out of the ashes of legendary R&B / beat band T-Boones in the summer of 1967. Guitar-wiz Kenny Håkansson joined the band in 1965 and with the group down to a trio they drifted into the psychedelic sounds of the time and in August 1967 released the single "I Want You", which definitely was the first hard-rock recording ever made in Sweden. The band was then re-christened Baby Grandmothers by the co-founder of the newly opened psychedelic club Filips, for which he needed a house-band. Filips was the legendary breeding ground for bands such as Hansson & Karlsson, Pärson Sound, as well as orgiastic all night jams with foreign luminaries such as Jimi Hendrix and the Mothers of Invention. Baby Grandmothers also supported Jimi Henrix on his Swedish tour in 1968 and then later turned into Mecki Mark Men, who became the first Swedish rock band to tour the US. Founding member Kenny Håkansson went on to form the highly influential Kebnekajse, who created the Swedish electric folk psych sound. This unique collection brings live-recordings made at Filips, their impossibly rare single and a rare live recording made in Finland. Painstakingly collected and researched by Dungen's guitarist Reine Fiske. Includes a lengthy and fascinating biography.

For fans of New Wave and Synth pop we bring you 'Music While You Work' a collection of tracks recorded in the early 80's by England's 1,000 Mexicans. One of the most innovative and creative independent bands of the 1980's, combining quality pop songwriting and rhythmic and harmonic richness with their unique touches of experimentalism and eccentricity. For those who like a healthy dose of humor with their pathos.

And finally we have The Truth by D.R. Hooker. Easily one of the rarest US psych LPs. The Truth was recorded in Connecticut in 1972 and might very well be the ultimate North American acid rock album ever. No hype here, just incredible talented music. Everything is absolute perfection, the wailing fuzz guitar, the psychy arrangements, his awesome voice, layers of instruments and well-crafted songs. One of those albums that keeps revealing new depths even when you've played it a hundred times. True psychedelia. Includes 6 bonus tracks not included on the original LP.

That about does it for now - We're working on a ton of great stuff for March, which will include the Lucifer Rising soundtrack (music made by Bobby Beausoleil with the Freedom Orchestra for Kenneth Anger's cult classic film) and we'll finally see our NWOBHM digital 7" series come to fruition. Much, much more, which we'll expand on in the next newsletter. Thanks for the continued support...
